Hello again, fellow travelers! 👋 I’m Laci Jo, and I’m back to talk about something that’s always on my mind—travel safety. As a former chief of police turned travel agent and mom of two, safety is at the core of everything I do. Whether I’m planning a family adventure or helping a client book a dream honeymoon, my goal is to ensure that every trip is safe, secure, and stress-free.
Today, I’m excited to share my Ultimate Travel Safety Checklist to help you stay prepared whether you’re exploring a new city, relaxing on a beach, or jet-setting across the globe. ✈️🌍

📝 1. Pre-Trip Safety Preparations
✅ Research Your Destination
Check travel advisories and safety updates from government websites.
Learn about local laws, customs, and emergency contact numbers.
Identify areas to avoid and safer neighborhoods for tourists.
Research common scams in the region to avoid falling victim.
Also a good reason to use, me, a travel agent who will do all this for you. 😉
✅ Register Your Trip (For International Travel)
Register with your country’s embassy or consulate before departure.
Provide family or friends with a copy of your itinerary in case of emergencies.
✅ Make Copies of Important Documents
Create physical and digital copies of your passport, visa, and travel insurance.
Save emergency contacts, credit card hotlines, and embassy information.
✅ Purchase Travel Insurance
Ensure coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and theft.
Pro Tip: Don’t skimp on travel insurance—it’s worth the peace of mind!

✅ Check Health & Vaccination Requirements
Get any necessary vaccinations and pack a basic first-aid kit.
Include prescription medications and any required health documentation.
✅ Secure Your Home Before You Leave

Lock doors and windows and set light timers to create the illusion someone is home. You don't have to use anything fancy, try something like this digital timer for a lamp by a window.
Arrange for mail pickup or place a hold on delivery services.
Let a trusted neighbor or family member know you’re away.
🎒 2. Packing for Safety
✅ Anti-Theft Travel Gear
Money belt or neck pouch to keep valuables secure.
RFID-blocking wallet or passport holder to prevent digital theft. Or check this one for family travel: Valante Premium Family Travel Document Organizer Capacious RFID Passport Holder Wallet
Crossbody bag with secure zippers to deter pickpockets.
✅ Emergency Supplies
First-aid kit (band-aids, antiseptic, pain relievers, motion sickness meds).
Flashlight or mini LED light for emergencies.
Extra prescription medications (in case of delays).
✅ Electronics & Communication
Fully charged phone with an international plan or local SIM card.
Portable power bank for backup charging.
Backup copies of important documents stored on a USB drive or cloud storage.
✈️ 3. Safety During Transit
✅ Airport, Train & Bus Safety
Keep personal belongings in sight at all times.
Use TSA-approved locks to secure luggage.
Avoid displaying valuables in public.
Never leave drinks unattended to prevent drink spiking. I have been suggesting something like these drink covers to whoever will listen for years!
✅ Car Travel Safety
Check rental car insurance coverage before departure.
Verify the car’s condition (brakes, lights, and tires).
Keep doors locked while driving and parked.
Avoid driving at night in unfamiliar or remote areas.
✅ Hotel Safety
Request a room on higher floors (safer from break-ins).
Use the hotel safe to store valuables.
Lock doors and use the security chain at all times.
Verify visitors before opening the door.
💡 Pro Tip: I highly recommend traveling with a portable door lock,
a door wedge alarm, and even a hidden camera detector for added hotel security or vacation rental home. These small, affordable gadgets can make a big difference in keeping your room secure. You can find them easily on Amazon!
🛡️ 4. Personal Security While Traveling
✅ Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Avoid distractions (e.g., looking down at your phone). I know I am asking a huge favor here, but you're on vacation! Look around and see the sights!!!
Walk confidently and stay in well-lit, populated areas.
If you get lost, step into a store or hotel before checking your phone or map.
✅ Be Cautious with Strangers
Do not share personal details with strangers.
Be skeptical of overly friendly locals offering unsolicited “help” or deals.
If someone makes you uncomfortable, move away and seek safety.
✅ Money & Valuables Security
Use ATMs inside banks or in well-lit public areas.
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
Split up money and cards between different bags or pockets.
Never leave valuables unattended.
✅ Emergency Contact Plan
Memorize at least one emergency contact number.
Know the location of the nearest hospital and police station.
Carry a local SIM card or ensure Wi-Fi access for emergencies.
✅ Safe Social Media Use
Avoid posting real-time locations to prevent being tracked.
Wait until after leaving a location to post updates.
Do not make social media posts announcing to the world you and your entire family will be gone! Instead, wait until you return and post all you want about how awesome your trip was.
🌞 5. Health & Well-Being
✅ Food & Water Safety
Avoid tap water unless it’s verified safe—stick to bottled or filtered water.
Choose street food vendors with high turnover and clean practices.
Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizer before eating.
✅ Sun & Climate Protection
Use sunscreen and stay hydrated in hot climates.
Dress in layers for fluctuating temperatures.
Be aware of altitude sickness and other climate-related risks.
✅ Preventing Illness & Injury
Wear appropriate footwear for walking or hiking.
Be mindful of uneven sidewalks, potholes, or slippery surfaces.
Know the symptoms of common travel illnesses like food poisoning or dehydration.
🏡 6. Post-Trip Safety Considerations
✅ Monitor Your Bank Statements
Check for unauthorized transactions.
Report lost or stolen credit cards immediately.
✅ Health Check-Up
If you feel unwell, consult a doctor—especially after visiting areas with disease risks.
✅ Secure & Store Travel Documents
Keep passports and important travel papers in a safe place.
✅ Leave Travel Reviews & Warnings
Share safety tips and experiences to help future travelers.
🚨 Final Travel Safety Reminders
✅ Trust Your Instincts – If something doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from the situation.
✅ Stay Connected – Regularly check in with friends or family.
✅ Keep a Low Profile – Avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself as a tourist.
